What do you think of psychics like John Edwards who say they communicate with the dead?

It would indeed be comforting to know that if it were only true. Con men like John Edwards, Sylvia Browne, James van Praagh and Allison DuBois (TV show “Medium” based on her) and others get rich by exploiting people in emotional distress.
I won’t argue whether or not there is an afterlife, but I will tell you about John Edwards and others. They use a variety of techniques. (televangelists use these tricks too)
Cold reading is very common…just rapid fire throwing out all kinds of random guesses. Well…not TOTALLY random, you will notice some patterns. You’ll see that their messages are quite vague at first….a name that starts with a B.. Bob Bobby Barbara Brian…and wait for someone to say their name is Barbara, or their dead son was called Brian etc etc Once they have a hit, they keep it up. They look for clues about how the person is dressed and how they reacted and keep going with rapid fire questions. John Edwards is very good at this technique…known as one of the fastest talking of the tele-psychics.
Warm readings are where they do actually have some knowledge of the people ahead of time. They control who is in the studio audience who are asked to fill in info cards long before they are seated. (” who are you hoping to connect with through Mr Edwards tonight?”) Audience members forget this when hours later during the taping, something very specific is mentioned, as they get caught up in the “spirit” of things and being on television. Also remember, these people are “primed” to believe…they came there hoping , wishing, praying for it to happen.
Hot reading….basically actors planted in the audience, or people known to them who they don’t acknowledge knowing. A shill. This “technique” doesn’t need any more explanation.
Also remember these people control the editing of what is shown on TV. Clever editing can make the results look better than they actually were. The measured hits when you see the full transcripts (i have) are very low…5-10 % but..People tend to remember the hits and forget the misses when they go to these events in person. A “hit” is intensely memorable..their dead son Brian was doing ok in the afterlife. Many when interviewed later realized that they had volunteered almost all the information and that only meaningless platitudes were offered. (“Brian says he loves you”)
James Randi (PBUH :))has been debunking these amoral crooks for years. Lots more info on his website
