I think it is a science, it’s just that people have gotten hung up on the idea of natural sciences (biology or chemistry) being the only ones to carry any validity. Remember psychology’s a social science. Science is in the title. It also (like a natural science) bases research on attempting to find objective and rational explanations for (instead of the natural world) social behavior. The practice also bases itself around the idea of getting reliable, trusted answers from systematic and logical methodology. It attempts to create knowledge that can be trusted and relied on (just like any science). We need to bare in mind as well that psychology is a broad field. It does not just cover ‘couch therapy’ but deals even with biomedical issues. For instance, when dealing with schizophrenia. Without biomedical psychology, we wouldn’t have discovered that schizophrenics tend to have a excess amount of dopamine in the brain. This means we can create medicine which lowers the dopamine levels, in most cases reducing the effects of the illness to a manageable level. Psychology helps many other mental and physical problems and I believe it is very much a science based on evidence and detailed methods of research.
