What ever happened to the connections made by the “dollar princesses” of the turn of the century?
What ever happened to the connections made between the families of the European aristocracy and the rich Americans daughters who married into them? Did America’s rich get bored with marrying for European status or are we still doing it?
Suggestion by Ms. Minerva
Yes, the Americans must undoubtedly have become bored with marrying Europeans.
Luckily, they did not become bored with it before one of them married into the Churchill family and produced Winston Churchill for England. Another one of them, Consuelo Vanderbilt, also married into the same family, rescuing the estate from financial difficulties by her dowry.
After World War II, when all of Europe was in shambles….economically as well as physically, it must have become apparent that it was going to take more than a few rich American women to rescue Europe and the UK from the wreckage. So, we adapted the Marshall Plan and sent a gajillion dollars over there to rebuild all of it.
The Marshal Plan money figures do not include all the other money we sent over there in the form of Lend-Lease. Nor does it include the money we have spent as NATO members.
All of Europe is full of cemeteries of dead American soldiers who went over there to help the UK fight to clear the continent of Nazis.
European “status” proved to be a bit over-rated, particularly once we became a nation of over 300 million people with the largest national economy in the world. We figure we can do without any European marriages.
The UK did send us Pamela Churchill after the war… We sortof “regifted her” to France. Good place for her. One of their royal family married Wallis Simpson. We regifted him to France, also.
There do continue to be connections, though…for example, this very forum we are all participating in is wholly owned by the American company,, Yahoo….which is based in California. It is a free forum, provided by an American company as a way of sharing American technology with the world.
All those from other nations are America’s guests on this forum. Higher status is always conferred on guests who are polite.

The number of rich American heiresses has dwindled but the cachet of a Title remains. Unfortunately, one result is a flood of questionable Titles floating around New York. I don’t know how folks on the Continent keep it all straight but those Titles do make good fodder for the tabloids and social columns.

Not all of these songs are well known by teens. I only know them b/c I’m a musical junky. I would be different and do a song no one knows, so when I bust it out every one is in shock and jealous they didn’t think outside the box.
Your Daddy’s Son- Ragtime (If you have the pipes for this, GBY.)
